I signed up for NordVPN back in August 2025, and six months later, I finally feel qualified to write this review. Not a weekend test. Not a press-release rewrite. Six actual months of tunnelling my Jio Fiber connection in Mumbai and my parents’ Airtel Broadband in Delhi through NordVPN’s servers — for work calls, streaming binges, weekend gaming, and everything in between.
If you are in India and weighing whether NordVPN is worth the money, this is the review I wish I had found before I subscribed. I have kept monthly speed logs, tested every major streaming platform, and dealt with NordVPN’s support team more than once. Here is every bit of it.
Installation and First Impressions on Indian Connections
Setting up NordVPN took me about four minutes on Windows and roughly two minutes on Android. The app auto-detected my location and suggested the nearest server — Mumbai #42, if I recall correctly. On my Jio Fiber 150 Mbps plan, the first connection took around eight seconds using the default NordLynx protocol. On Airtel Broadband in Delhi (100 Mbps plan), it was closer to twelve seconds, which is still perfectly fine.
NordVPN currently lists virtual server locations for India routed through Singapore and the UAE, ever since it pulled physical servers out of the country following the 2022 CERT-In data-retention directive. That sounds like a deal-breaker on paper, but in practice, the latency penalty was smaller than I expected — more on that below.
One thing I noticed early on: Jio Fiber handles VPN handshakes more smoothly than Airtel. On Airtel, I occasionally had to switch from NordLynx to OpenVPN UDP to get a stable tunnel, especially during peak evening hours between 8 and 11 PM IST. NordVPN’s auto-connect feature eventually learned this pattern and started routing me through OpenVPN on Airtel without manual intervention, which was a pleasant surprise.
Speed Logs: Monthly Averages from Mumbai and Delhi
Here is where most reviews hand-wave. I ran Ookla Speedtest at least three times a week, always at 10 AM and 9 PM IST, and averaged the results monthly. My baseline without VPN was 145 to 150 Mbps on Jio Fiber and 92 to 98 Mbps on Airtel.
Mumbai (Jio Fiber 150 Mbps) — NordLynx Protocol:
- September 2025: 128 Mbps avg down / 41 Mbps up
- October 2025: 131 Mbps avg down / 43 Mbps up
- November 2025: 126 Mbps avg down / 39 Mbps up
- December 2025: 134 Mbps avg down / 44 Mbps up
- January 2026: 130 Mbps avg down / 42 Mbps up
- February 2026: 132 Mbps avg down / 43 Mbps up
Delhi (Airtel 100 Mbps) — NordLynx Protocol:
- September 2025: 74 Mbps avg down / 28 Mbps up
- October 2025: 78 Mbps avg down / 30 Mbps up
- November 2025: 71 Mbps avg down / 26 Mbps up
- December 2025: 80 Mbps avg down / 31 Mbps up
- January 2026: 76 Mbps avg down / 29 Mbps up
- February 2026: 79 Mbps avg down / 30 Mbps up
For comparison, I tested OpenVPN UDP on the same connections. Speeds dropped to roughly 85 to 95 Mbps on Jio and 52 to 60 Mbps on Airtel. The gap between NordLynx and OpenVPN is significant — NordLynx consistently delivers 35 to 40 percent better throughput. If your device supports it, there is no reason to use anything else unless your ISP actively throttles WireGuard-based traffic, which I have not seen Jio or Airtel do so far in 2026.
A quick note on ISP throttling: during IPL 2025, I noticed Jio Fiber slowing down connections to certain international IPs around match time. Turning on NordVPN actually improved my speeds to JioCinema’s CDN endpoints, which suggests Jio was deprioritising unencrypted traffic to manage congestion. Ironic, but useful.
🔒 Our #1 VPN Recommendation
NordVPN — Best Overall VPN for India. Tested from India, starting at ₹279/mo.
Streaming and Gaming: Netflix, Hotstar, JioCinema, and BGMI
Netflix: Connecting to NordVPN’s US servers (I used New York #6841 and Los Angeles #8024 most often) unlocked the American Netflix library without issues for the first four months. In January 2026, I hit a two-day stretch where Netflix detected the VPN and showed the proxy error. Switching servers fixed it each time. Overall success rate over six months: roughly 95 percent. That is better than most competitors I have tried — when I briefly tested ExpressVPN India, it had a similar hit rate but at a higher price point.
Disney+ Hotstar: Works natively from India, of course, but when I was testing the Singapore virtual servers, Hotstar geo-blocked me. Disconnecting from VPN or connecting to the India (virtual) server fixed it instantly. No complaints here.
JioCinema: This was tricky. JioCinema’s free tier requires a Jio number verification, and it occasionally flagged my connection when routed through NordVPN’s virtual India servers. The workaround was split tunnelling — I excluded the JioCinema app from the VPN tunnel on Android, which solved it permanently. For IPL streaming specifically, this setup worked flawlessly.
BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India): Gaming over a VPN is always a latency gamble. Connecting to NordVPN’s Singapore servers, my ping to BGMI’s closest server sat between 58 and 72 ms, compared to 22 to 35 ms without VPN. That is playable for casual matches but competitive players will feel the difference. For reference, Surfshark deal users I know in Bangalore report similar ping ranges to Singapore, so this is not a NordVPN-specific issue — it is just the reality of routing through virtual servers post-CERT-In.
CERT-In Compliance and Privacy Considerations
This matters more than most Indian users realise. In 2022, India’s CERT-In mandated that VPN providers operating servers in India must log user data for five years. NordVPN, along with ExpressVPN and Surfshark, responded by removing physical servers from India. NordVPN now routes Indian traffic through virtual servers based in Singapore and the UAE.
What this means in practice: NordVPN does not comply with CERT-In’s logging mandate because it simply does not operate physical infrastructure within Indian jurisdiction. Your traffic exits through Singapore or UAE, where NordVPN maintains its strict no-logs policy, which has been independently audited by Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers multiple times.
Is this legal for Indian users? Using a VPN remains perfectly legal in India. The CERT-In rules target VPN providers operating servers on Indian soil, not end users. You are not breaking any law by connecting to NordVPN from Mumbai or Delhi. That said, I am not a lawyer — if your use case involves sensitive regulatory territory, consult one.
Customer Support, Pricing in INR, and the Verdict
Support: I contacted NordVPN’s live chat three times over six months. Once for the Netflix blocking issue (resolved in eleven minutes with a server recommendation), once for a connection drop loop on Airtel (they walked me through switching protocols in about eight minutes), and once to ask about the Meshnet feature (quick, helpful response). Average wait time was under two minutes. No complaints.
Pricing: As of February 2026, NordVPN’s pricing for Indian users breaks down as follows:
**Basic 2-year plan:**approximately ₹259/month (billed ₹6,210 upfront)**Plus 2-year plan:**approximately ₹349/month (includes password manager and data breach scanner)**Complete 2-year plan:**approximately ₹439/month (adds 1 TB encrypted cloud storage)**Monthly plan:**approximately ₹999/month (not recommended — poor value)
The 2-year Basic plan is the sweet spot for most Indian users. At ₹259/month, it undercuts ExpressVPN significantly (which runs around ₹550/month on its annual plan) while delivering comparable performance. Get NordVPN during a sale period and you might catch an even better rate — they frequently bundle three extra months free.
Pros
- NordLynx speeds are excellent — minimal drop on Jio Fiber connections
- Reliable Netflix US unblocking (95%+ success over six months)
- No-logs policy independently audited, no CERT-In compliance concerns
- Competitive INR pricing on 2-year plans
- Split tunnelling works well for JioCinema and Indian banking apps
- 5,800+ servers across 60 countries give plenty of routing options
Cons
- No physical servers in India — virtual servers add 15 to 25 ms latency
- Airtel connections sometimes need manual protocol switching
- BGMI ping is noticeable for competitive play
- JioCinema requires split tunnelling to work properly
- Monthly plan pricing is steep at ₹999
Final Thoughts: Is NordVPN Worth It in India in 2026?
After six months, NordVPN has become one of those apps that just runs in the background and does its job. The speeds on Jio Fiber are genuinely impressive — losing only 10 to 15 percent of my bandwidth through NordLynx is about as good as VPN performance gets in 2026. On Airtel, the experience is slightly rougher around the edges but still very usable.
If your primary use cases are streaming geo-blocked content, maintaining privacy from ISP-level tracking, and working around the occasional throttling that Indian ISPs love to impose during peak hours, NordVPN handles all three reliably. Competitive gamers who need sub-30 ms ping should probably game without a VPN and only connect it for everything else.
For the price — especially on the 2-year plan at ₹259/month — it is hard to beat. I have tried Surfshark (close competitor, better on simultaneous device limits but slightly slower) and ExpressVPN (excellent but expensive). NordVPN sits right in the middle: fast enough, private enough, and affordable enough for the average Indian user who wants a dependable VPN without overpaying.
Would I renew? Yes. In fact, I already set my subscription to auto-renew. That should tell you more than any rating out of ten.
